As a Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) specializing in robotic surgery, you are a vital link between the surgical team and advanced medical technology. You work under the direction of a consultant surgeon. Your main goal is to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality care for patients undergoing robotic procedures.
Before the operation begins, your preparation is key. You assess patients, explain the robotic procedure, and answer their questions. Inside the operating room, you set up the complex robotic system. You calibrate the cameras, prepare the specialized instruments, and position the robot next to the patient.
During the surgery, the lead surgeon sits at a separate console to control the robot. This means your role at the patient's bedside is absolutely critical. You act as the surgeon’s hands right next to the patient. You exchange robotic instruments, manage the surgical tools, and clear the camera lens when needed. Because you maintain a sterile field, you can step in immediately if the surgeon needs manual help. Your constant communication keeps the entire operating room running smoothly.
Your responsibilities do not end when the surgery finishes. After the procedure, you help close wounds and apply dressings. You oversee the safe removal of the robot. In the recovery ward, you monitor the patient’s initial progress, manage pain relief, and help plan their discharge.
