About the role

Express Nursing are supporting a not for profit organisation that is focused on supporting children and young people to live safe, happy, healthy and successful lives.

We are recruiting Residential Workers in a Children's Home to provide care to vulnerable residents. This role requires shift work across all 7 days of the week, throughout the full year, including Christmas, New Year and other bank holidays.

As a Play and Leisure Assistant, you will assist the group leader in providing a safe, stimulating and enjoyable play or leisure environment for children and young people with a disability. You will encourage children to have a voice, participate in group activities, to develop intellectual and social skills, and also encourage them to use various resources and experience a range of activities. 

Short breaks provide support to young people who have a disability and live in the Kingston and Richmond boroughs. The client runs group sessions after school, weekends and holidays. You will also provide support in the community on a one to one basis plus assist young people in mainstream clubs to enable them access those clubs. Groups use our centres as well as go out into the community for trips out. 

Key Responsibilities

This post will be responsible for providing care to vulnerable residents; ensuring the buildings are safe and secure and for carrying out some cleaning and administrative duties. The postholder may be required to do regular welfare checks on a young person who is high risk of self harming or having suicidal ideations or is at risk of going missing.

Care offered includes:

  • Responding to times of crises
  • Supporting nighttime staff with setting an environment for the children
  • Supporting the children, ensuring safeguarding policies and procedures are implemented
  • Ensure the upkeep of the home is maintained
  • Liaising with agencies, stakeholders and services associated with the home

The successful candidate will have the following aptitudes: 

  • Ability to assess risk and generate solutions to problems, strong analytical and planning skills, and the ability to assess and review young people’s needs.
  • Commitment to the protection and safeguarding to young people at risk of abuse or harm.
  • Ability to identify and record any safeguarding issues in accordance with the Residential Home’s Safeguarding procedures.
  • Commitment to carry out day-to-day and deep cleaning tasks and routine Health & Safety checklist task.

You will promote positive attachments and relationships, working within the wider framework of professionals and families in order to understand a child’s life experience and respond and act in ways that improve a child’s opportunities and potential. You will work directly with children providing the best quality of personalised care that meets their needs whilst working part of a team that provides warmth, nurture and care for very vulnerable young people.

As a Therapeutic Intervention Worker you will be responsible for:

  • Recognising signs of abuse and trauma and dealing with safeguarding issues appropriately when they arise
  • Recognising and dealing with conflict and challenging behaviours and situations with young people
  • Following risk assessments to keep children safe
  • Direct therapeutic work with children and young people
  • Work within a Secure Base therapeutic framework
  • As well as working with the children, completing household chores

Candidate Requirements

Essential:
  • This role requires shift work across all 7 days of the week, throughout the full year, including Christmas, New Year and other bank holidays.
  • Due to the nature of working in Children’s Homes, enhanced vetting is required. This includes reviewing your full employment history from the point you left school.
  • This post will be based across provider services in Windsor, Teddington and Surbiton children’s homes.
Role Responsibilities
  • To provide leadership to less experienced staff to ensure the development of best care practice and optimal outcomes for clients.
  • To provide therapeutic and personal care to the patient.
  • Promote the rights of patient to be treated with dignity and respect in every aspect of their lives
  • Respect the confidences of patients, except where to do so would result in harm to a patient, damage to the property or the commission of a criminal offence.
  • Establish supportive relationships with patients and encourage the development of stable relationships between the patient and other staff, and their families and friends.
  • Promote the emotional health and self-esteem of the patient and support them through changes in living circumstances and personal relationships.
  • Support patient in making their own choices and decisions to the maximum of their capability and ensure that the needs and wishes of the patient is fully considered in any decision relating to them.
  • Ensure the protection of the patient from significant harm, by exercising vigilance, observing changes in the patient's behaviour or appearance, and complying fully with the Vulnerable Children policy.
