As a Paediatric Nurse (RSCN), you look after babies, children, and young people who are unwell or need treatment. Your job is not only about nursing skills. It is about helping your patients feel safe, cared for, and understood. When you stay kind and confident, your patients and their families feel less worried.
In your day-to-day work, you check your patients closely. You monitor things like temperature, breathing, heart rate, pain, and how they are behaving. Because children can change quickly, you notice problems early and act fast. You follow the care plan and work with doctors and other staff to give the right treatment at the right time.
A big part of your role is communication. You explain what is happening in a way that fits your patient’s age and understanding. You may use calm words, distraction, or play to help reduce fear. You also support parents or carers by answering questions and sharing clear updates about care and treatment.
You carry out important nursing tasks such as giving medicines, preparing equipment, supporting procedures, and helping with comfort care. You protect your patients’ dignity and privacy. You also follow infection prevention and control rules. Because children are not the same as adults, you use child-friendly approaches and make sure everything is correct and safe.
You also support patients with tests and recovery. You help prepare them before procedures and comfort them during and after. After treatment, you support recovery, hydration, feeding if needed, and safe discharge planning.
