In the Cath Lab, you play a key role in making sure patients get heart and blood vessel procedures safely and smoothly. You are the nurse who helps prepare, assist during the procedure, and care for the patient afterward—before, during, and after every step.
Before the procedure, you review the patient’s condition and check important details like allergies, vital signs, medications, and consent. You help prepare the room and equipment, including checking supplies for the type of procedure (like angiography or angioplasty). You also help with IV access, collecting samples if needed, and making sure the patient is comfortable and informed. You often explain what will happen next in calm, simple terms.
During the procedure, you work closely with the cardiologist, technologists, and the rest of the team. Your focus is on patient safety. You monitor the patient’s heart rhythm, blood pressure, oxygen level, and breathing. You assist by positioning the patient correctly and helping maintain sterile technique. You also manage medications given in the lab (as ordered), and you watch closely for any changes—like bleeding, chest discomfort, low blood pressure, or allergic reactions.
You also use radiation safety practices. You will wear protective gear and follow the team’s positioning rules to reduce exposure.
After the procedure, your job is to recover the patient safely. You check the access site (often the wrist or groin) for bleeding, swelling, or pain. You continue monitoring vital signs and ensure the patient follows movement restrictions. You help with discharge readiness by teaching warning signs, activity limits, and follow-up instructions.
Overall, your role is to be the patient’s safety partner—watching closely, staying organized, communicating clearly, and helping the team deliver care with confidence.
