About the role

As an angio scrub nurse, you play a vital role in life-saving cardiac and vascular procedures. You are the primary assistant to the interventional cardiologist or radiologist inside the cardiac catheterization laboratory. Your main responsibility is to maintain a sterile environment and ensure that the medical team has the exact tools they need at the right moment.

Before the procedure begins, you prepare the sterile field. You carefully arrange specialized equipment, such as catheters, guidewires, stents, and balloons. Your sharp attention to detail ensures that every instrument is functioning and ready for use. When the patient arrives, you help position them comfortably and drape them to prevent infections.

During the operation, you stand directly next to the physician. You anticipate their needs by passing instruments quickly and accurately. Because angio procedures rely heavily on real-time X-ray imaging, you must understand the steps of the surgery perfectly. You monitor the sterile tray constantly, wiping down wires and flushing catheters with saline to prevent blood clots from forming.

Communication is another critical part of your job. You act as a bridge between the sterile team and the circulating nurse. You also keep a close eye on the patient’s condition, tracking vital signs alongside the rest of the laboratory staff. If an emergency arises, your calm focus helps the team react instantly to stabilize the patient.

After the procedure, you secure the insertion site to prevent bleeding. You then help transfer the patient safely to the recovery unit. Finally, you clean the sterile area, count all instruments, and document the details of the supplies used. Your technical skill, quick thinking, and dedication keep patients safe during complex vascular interventions.
